Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!
On this day in 1919,
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day. What does “Armistice” mean? According to the dictionary, it means a temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement of the
warring parties; truce. President Wilson
chose November 11th because it was one year to the day after the end
of World War I ─ “the war to end all wars.”
This original holiday was set aside to honor the veterans of World War I. There was hope that there would be no
more wars. Sadly, we have experienced
many since 1919.
On May 13, 1938, Armistice
Day became a legal holiday ─ a day to be dedicated to the cause of world
peace. In 1954, after World War II had
required the greatest mobilization of our armed forces in the Nation’s history
and after our forces fought in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the
veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by changing the word
"Armistice" to "Veterans." On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day
to honor American veterans of all
wars.
So isn’t this the
perfect day to thank the men and women that serve our country every day and
remember those that have served all of us in the past and wish them a Happy Veterans Day?
