Racial issues remain a hot topic on some college campuses

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Today’s generation has grown up arguably without seeing anything close to the type of racism that its mothers and fathers witnessed. However, racism on college campuses continues to be a hot topic, especially at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

There, a fraternity had planned a party inviting “rappers, twerkers, and gangsters, back to the hood.” Members of the African American community decided to speak out against the fraternity and the party was cancelled. Still, the University reports a decline in the enrollment of African Americans from 6.2 percent in 2009 to 4.6 percent in 2013.

According to a New York Times article, similar episodes of racism have occurred on college campuses across the nation including, Dartmouth, the University of California Los Angeles, Arizona State University, and the University of Mississippi.

I believe that our nation has obviously taken steps in the right direction when it comes to racism, but people can never be too cautious. I would urge everyone to truly think about what it would feel like to be in the other person’s shoes when saying something hurtful.
