Toyota Shows Off a Hydrogen Car in San Francisco

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

This week, Toyota, brought their new, 2015FCV, to AT&T Park in San Francisco. The FCV designation stands for Fuel Cell Vehicle. The fuel cell contains hydrogen gas and oxygen that yields electricity, heat and water. This is the first production vehicle from Toyota that is hydrogen powered and will be available by mid-2015.

This is a concept that Toyota has been researching for seven years. Other car companies including General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai, and Honda have been experimenting with this type of propulsion system for many years as well. Hydrogen powered cars are zero emission vehicles and can refuel in about the same amount of time as their conventional gasoline powered counterparts and they are zero emission cars.

The problem is a network of stations to fuel the vehicles. In 2008, amidst much fanfare, a Shell station 5 blocks from where I live announced that they were the first gas station to offer Hydrogen in Los Angeles. It is still open but has few customers for the alternative fuel. The station is one of only 9 open in the entire state of California. That creates a great deal of uncertainty among people considering the expensive ownership of these cars. A report by the California Fuel Cell Partnership was released this past July. It indicates that there will be about 50 stations opening by 2016.

It seems like the success of this technology depends on the system of stations selling hydrogen in California and the rest of the nation. It may be quite a gamble by Toyota, however, if the station network becomes a reality they may have quite a success on their hands.
And, according to Toyota, the FCV could be set up to double as a source of electricity to power your home in the even you lose power for some time. Currently the reverse is true. There are several electric car models on the market that use 220v electricity to charge the automobile in your garage.

But what happens if the power goes out?

Perhaps those available with a range-extender, gasoline powered generator, like Chevrolet’s Volt, will help you get to the nearest conventional gas station if they have electricity to power the gas pumps!

What do you think? Would you lease or buy a Hydrogen powered vehicle or wait and see?
