User Generated Content (UGC) Infographic

What Is UGC?

What is User Generated Content?

User-Generated Content (UGC) refers to any form of content created by unpaid contributors. UGC can come in many forms such as pictures, videos, tweets, pins, reviews, testimonials, posts, etc, and it is often – but not always – created and shared via social media networks. As the amount of User-Generated Content being created has grown — in 2014, KPCB analyst Mary Meeker reported that almost 2 billion photos are shared online each day — brands have begun leveraging this UGC within their own social media marketing as well as across their other marketing channels. Sophisticated marketers have incorporated User-Generated Content directly into their websites, email campaigns, and digital advertising.

Why is User Generated Content Important?

According to a study done by Nielsen, “92% of consumers trust online content from friends & family above all other forms of brand messaging. And they trust strangers second most — far more than they trust content from brands.” With advances in technology like smartphones and high-speed mobile internet, consumers have gained the ability to easily create and share this type of “trusted” content. Smart marketers are leveraging User-Generated Content across their owned channels to improve engagement and drive higher levels of revenue.
