A former CIA spy has revealed his key
role in the arrest of Nelson Mandela, which led to the future South
African president’s trial and imprisonment for almost 28 years.
The bombshell disclosure led yesterday to a demand for the CIA to come clean about putting behind bars a figure who became one of the world’s most revered statesmen.
A veteran political associate of Mandela called it a “shameful act of betrayal” that “hindered the struggle against apartheid”.

The Sunday Times described Rickards revelation as a bombshell that could foster a CIA revelation about its real relation with the apartheid regime.
Rickard was a young diplomat at the US consulate in the South African city of Durban at the time of Mandelas arrest.
When he was asked in 2012 about his role in the arrest he told the Wall Street Journal that it was a lie, that there was no substance in that story, however, he changed his mind and put an end to an open secret.
