Greetings from Mobile
Generated News® MoGN!
There is a new restaurant chain in Southern California,
called Stacked: Food Well Built. They
have a “new ordering approach”. Although you are
greeted by a host or hostess and have a food server assigned to you, the first
thing you notice when you are seated is an iPad on a stand with a credit card
reader attached in the middle of the table.
The iPad is specially configured.
It first asks you to slide your credit card to get to the restaurant
menu. From the menu you can order
beverages ̶ including beer and wine and your lunch or dinner which includes
burgers, pizzas, salads and mac ‘n’ cheese.
“Drop down” menus follow so that you can customize your order. You also have the option to have the
beverages delivered before or with the meal.
So that’s the concept, here are my observations;
The Downside:
Although well trained and charming, there were fewer waiters and waitresses. It brought to mind the self-service checkout lanes now prevalent in supermarkets.
A trend that has begun and will continue ̶ technology will eventually take over traditional service jobs.
Been to a mall lately? Have you noticed that parking cashiers are disappearing?
You get the point.
The Upside:
The order was exactly what I requested, cooked the way I wanted it.
The food came out faster and was hot. (and was excellent-by the way)
My credit card was already in the system so instead of hunting down the waiter or waitress, I just pressed “checkout” on the iPad.
The food server had more time to chat with me and made me feel
welcome.
So what do you think? Would you enjoy the experience of ordering from an IPad? Could this approach be coming to a drive-thru window at a Fast Food restaurant near you?
I look forward to your comments.
