What does it take to keep PayPal running
smoothly? Lots of data, techies ready to spring into action, and
software that can fix itself.
(....)
Behind the glass is a room whose other walls are plastered with
enormous displays, dense with numbers and graphs. PayPal employees sit
at rows of desks, staring at additional information on PC monitors.
There's data everywhere, being updated in real time. Even observing it
from a distance—and not having a clue what most of it means—is an
intense experience.
(..) Just to state the utterly obvious,
there's real money at stake: With 173 million active customers, PayPal
processes an average of $8,773 in payments every second.
