Part of my weekend was spent upgrading my 3 Apple devices
to iOS 7. Do I know how to have a good
time or what? And yes, I was one of
those that upgraded my old iPhone 5
to an iPhone 5s. No I didn’t get the gold one. I got the “Space
Gray” color.
Yes I am a first adopter ─ Guilty as charged. I know I should be in therapy for this but this is my phobia. I may have inherited this from my 97-year old Dad whose obsession was buying a new car every year. In his day, it cost him $1,500 a year to trade up ─ $125 a month for the new car smell and prestige.
I am still evaluating my new iPhone 5s. I will talk about that in a future blog.
Now for iOS 7, the interface is strikingly appealing. You will first notice that the typography is easier to read and the system has been re-designed be new, yet familiar.
So What’s new?
From the home screen, when you swipe from the bottom of any iOS 7 device, a “Control Center” appears. From here you can conveniently jump directly to your Camera, Timer, play a song from iTunes, Turn on or off the Aircraft mode, change your WIFI and Bluetooth settings, enable “Do not Disturb,” lock the device rotation and adjust volume and brightness.
The old Notification Center can now be accessed without having to unlock the device, so you instantly know if you have emails, text messages or alerts from Apps that you have downloaded.
There is new multitasking center which allows you to jump from one frequently used App to another without returning to the home screen.
Camera and Photo functions have been redesigned and organized.
Something called “Airdrop” allows you to send contacts, videos and photos with a new “Share” button. The device uses WIFI or Bluetooth automatically to make the transfers.
iTunes Radio is Apple’s answer to Pandora. The more you listen to a certain genre of music, the more the iOS 7 remembers and makes the listening experience like you are programming your own radio station.
There are many other tweaks and improvements too numerous to mention except one last major change, Siri, the famous digital assistant, is no longer gender specific ─ besides her familiar female voice there is now a male voice option.
Are you an earlier adopter or are you going to wait? Eventually you are going to have to give in, as the functionality of the Apple devices take advantage of all of iOS 7’s new features. So I say why not take the leap now.
So what do you think?
I look forward to your comments.
