Tesla Automotive founder wants his cars to swim and fly!

Elon Musk, who owns Tesla Motors and SpaceX wants to build cars that can go underwater and fly in the air.  In addition to announcing yesterday that he will share all of his electric car patents with other companies, this entrepreneur sees automobiles that will go where no other car has gone before.

Well that’s not quite true.

In the not so distant past there was the Amphicar which was a small compact car that you could drive into the bay or lake because it could float and was equipped with two small propellers attached to the engine.  Only 4000 of them were built by 1966.

To my knowledge no one has built a successful flying automobile    ̶ although a company called Terrafugia based in Boston is developing a 2-person aircraft with wings that fold so that it can be driven on the road.

The ideas of flying cars and automobile boats have been successful only in science fiction movies, but bravo to Elon Musk and Terrafugia Inc. for giving the concepts a chance in the future.
