Soon You Will Be Able to Unlock Your Cellphone

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Right now, most cellphones are locked to the provider that sold them, but there is legislation on President Obama’s desk that would give consumers the right to legally unlock phones and change carriers.

"The bill Congress passed today is another step toward giving ordinary Americans more flexibility and choice, so that they can find a cell phone carrier that meets their needs and their budget," President Obama said.

Most phones that are under contract are locked to the cellular carrier that sells them, and consumers must obtain permission to unlock phones – even after the phones are paid off and contracts have expired. Basically, consumers needed to buy a new phone if they wanted to switch to a different provider.

This is a wonderful development for consumers and means a true cost savings for people who may love their phone but disenchanted with their provider’s service. The President is expected to sign the bill very soon.
