Apple Responds to iOS 8 Shortcomings

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Apple has acknowledged problems with an iOS update that was released yesterday. The update was designed to fix issues in the original iOS 8 released last Wednesday, September 17, 2014.

According to Apple Support, the update 8.01 was designed to fix many glitches in the new software including the much publicized Health App. They are working on a new update which should address many of the problems with the extensive operating system change from iOS 7 to iOS 8. “We are also preparing iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it's ready in the next few days.”

Complaints were reported that cellphone service and Touch ID were not working.

Smartphones are getting so smart and more complex that these type of issues are becoming commonplace. As we learned developing our Mobile Generated News® App, the technology is changing so fast that even the geniuses at Apple can’t seem to get it right the first time.

Do you think this is hurting Apple’s reputation or is it acceptable given the difference between laboratory testing and experience learned when technology is released to the real world?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.

Apple’s iOS 8 is Available Now

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

If you read this blog with any regularity, you know that I am a first adopter. I must have the latest and greatest gizmo the day it is available. My close personal friends actually call me Mr. Gadget!

I first installed iOS 8 on my iPhone 5s. The installation took about an hour, the phone reset 3 times, but it seemed to have gone flawlessly. When I went to download iOS 8 on my iPad, I received a message that told me that I was in line for the update and would download automatically. I decided to go to lunch and upon my return, sure enough it automatically downloaded the update for installation.

Again, given that this experience happened just hours after it was released, it’s an excellent sign that Apple has its act together when it comes to updating their operating systems.

What to expect in the update?

According to Apple there will be improvements in Messages, Photo handling, Camera.  Also a new "Quick Type" keyboard and a New Health App. On my devices, 3 new Apps appeared   ̶  Health, Podcasts and Tips. The latter promises to deliver new tips from Apple every week on how to “Do more with iPhone.”

I’ll report in a future blog and more specifics as I try them out. We’ll also find out in the days ahead, if everyone had the same positive experience that I had throughout the installation process.

Watch this space.

Apple Announces Apple Watch, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So after all of the rumors reported here and everywhere in the tech world, the rumors became reality. Today they announced an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen, an iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch screen and the Apple Watch.

Both iPhones will have a new, Retina HD screen with “Ultra HD” resolution. There is a new horizontal view that looks like my iPad Air and iPad Mini. It allows one- handed operation on both models. Both phones are also slim like the newer iPad touch, just 6.9 millimeters. There is also a new A8 processor that Apple says is 50% faster for graphics and makes the phone better on battery usage. There are many more tweaks and improvements too numerous to mention here except one that comes with the New iOS 8 Upgrade available September 17th:

Apple Pay: Allows you to purchase anything a retail location just by touching the sensor at the register with your iPhone. Similar to other mobile payment devices, the seller never touches or looks at your credit card details. Tim Cook said he wants to eliminate the conventional wallet! American Express, Visa and MasterCard are on board along with six major banking institutions. Some 220,000 merchants including Macy’s McDonald’s and Whole Foods will accept it. Even Uber, Panera Bread and Groupon will include it in their Apps. Can my favorite, Pinkberry, be far behind?

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will launch be available in 10-days on September 19, 2014. The Price? $199 for the 16gb version, $299, for the 64gb and there is even a 128gb version for $399. All based on 2-year contract pricing.

Now on to the Apple Watch. It won’t be available to purchase until early next year. However, it may be worth the wait. The Apple Watch sports a sapphire display and Apple Pay just to name two of its, many features. It looks like a tiny square iPhone with a "Digital Crown," on the side to navigate. The price $349.

Some Android phone users are already saying that many of the features that Apple announced today they already have but in my opinion, no other operating system or company can boast the superior eco system, fit, finish and intuitive simplicity that is the hallmark of Apple. And no, I am not an investor and wasn’t paid to say this. I just admire their design, dependability, reliability and their technical support. It’s the main reason that Mobile Generated News® developed our Apps on the Apple iOS system first.

Just Days Before Apple’s Big Event, CEO Tim Cook Talks iCloud Security

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Next Tuesday, September 9, 2014, is expected to be the most significant Apple event of the Tim Cook era at Apple.

In a rare interview about iCloud security, the Apple CEO addressed concerns following the celebrity nude photo leak of last weekend. According to the Wall Street Journal, Tim Cook said the company will increase security on iCloud. He repeated the statement released earlier this week that the attacks were targeted toward specific individuals. The hackers were able to use various methods to guess those specific passwords. It was not a widespread hack of iCloud.

As a response to the attacks, Apple plans to have new security updates to its iCloud and iTunes login system within two weeks. The updates will notify users directly on their devices whenever someone tries to access their account from a new, unregistered device or tries to change a password. Currently, users were only sent an email.

Additionally, Apple will make improvements to its 2-step authentication security system that requires users to input a second code sent to another registered device in order to access an iTunes account. The 2-step authentication will apply to iCloud when Apple releases iOS 8, its new mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads, in a few weeks.

As we have said here in this blog before, users of wireless technology need to think before they share sensitive material to the Internet or cloud based service. Given the celebrity photo incident and the reports of Home Depot, Morgan Stanley, Target and other company’s credit card security breaches of late, we all must take action!

Check out our Mobile Generated News® blog from this past Wednesday, September 3, 2014 and follow the three easy steps to stronger password protection.
