Apple Responds to iOS 8 Shortcomings

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Apple has acknowledged problems with an iOS update that was released yesterday. The update was designed to fix issues in the original iOS 8 released last Wednesday, September 17, 2014.

According to Apple Support, the update 8.01 was designed to fix many glitches in the new software including the much publicized Health App. They are working on a new update which should address many of the problems with the extensive operating system change from iOS 7 to iOS 8. “We are also preparing iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it's ready in the next few days.”

Complaints were reported that cellphone service and Touch ID were not working.

Smartphones are getting so smart and more complex that these type of issues are becoming commonplace. As we learned developing our Mobile Generated News® App, the technology is changing so fast that even the geniuses at Apple can’t seem to get it right the first time.

Do you think this is hurting Apple’s reputation or is it acceptable given the difference between laboratory testing and experience learned when technology is released to the real world?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.

Record iPhone Sales

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

According to the latest Apple news release, the company has sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models just three days after the launch, last Friday, September 19. A new sales record for iPhones.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin.”

In my opinion, they could have sold even more if they anticipated the demand and streamlined the order process. As much as I am an Apple fan of their design and craftsmanship, many people that did everything they were told to do were left with a 3-4 week wait for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Imagine the record they could have broken and how much happier their loyalists would be if they did at least the same job they did a year ago when the iPhone 5s was available for pre-order.

How a company so advanced could not make sure their systems and personnel were ready for the onslaught of orders? Or did they just plan it this way to build up demand?

What do you think?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Arrive Sort Of

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

For those who were able to get through on the website for pre-orders some of you got your iPhones today. For those of you who waited in long lines at Apple Stores many more of you got your iPhones today. For those of you contracted with carriers Verizon, Sprint and AT&T and went to your local Best Buy Store many of you were able to get both models without having to wait in long lines overnight.

For those with T-Mobile things were different. On pre-order night, you couldn’t purchase a T-Mobile iPhone in the Apple App store on your iPad or iPhone. Today, if you went to a T-Mobile store anywhere in the Los Angeles area, you might have been lucky to get an iPhone 6, but none of the stores   ̶  I was told by a forthright store manager had any iPhone 6 Plus phones to sell. She said the quantities were extremely limited and didn't expect the iPhone Plus until October. We all know that T-Mobile is the smallest of the major US cell phone providers, however their customers deserve better.

Is this a T-Mobile issue or an Apple issue or both?

We’ll see in the days ahead whether more new iPhone models will be allocated for T-Mobile.

Just asking.

Apple’s iOS 8 is Available Now

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

If you read this blog with any regularity, you know that I am a first adopter. I must have the latest and greatest gizmo the day it is available. My close personal friends actually call me Mr. Gadget!

I first installed iOS 8 on my iPhone 5s. The installation took about an hour, the phone reset 3 times, but it seemed to have gone flawlessly. When I went to download iOS 8 on my iPad, I received a message that told me that I was in line for the update and would download automatically. I decided to go to lunch and upon my return, sure enough it automatically downloaded the update for installation.

Again, given that this experience happened just hours after it was released, it’s an excellent sign that Apple has its act together when it comes to updating their operating systems.

What to expect in the update?

According to Apple there will be improvements in Messages, Photo handling, Camera.  Also a new "Quick Type" keyboard and a New Health App. On my devices, 3 new Apps appeared   ̶  Health, Podcasts and Tips. The latter promises to deliver new tips from Apple every week on how to “Do more with iPhone.”

I’ll report in a future blog and more specifics as I try them out. We’ll also find out in the days ahead, if everyone had the same positive experience that I had throughout the installation process.

Watch this space.

iPhone 6 is a Sellout

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

This should come as no surprise, Apple has done it again! They have set a new sales record for their biggest seller, the iPhone. This despite the miserable and frustrating pre-ordering process that so many experienced last week.

Apple announced that 4-million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Smartphones sold in the first 24 hours. The iPhone 6 Plus sold out before the iPhone 6 suggesting that consumers really wanted an iPhone with a larger screen.

To put some perspective to this, the iPhone 5 pre-orders were 2-million in 2012. Apple didn’t take pre-orders for the iPhone 5s and industry sources estimated that the iPhone 5c sold 2.2 million pre-orders in 2013.

The large number of pre-orders will undoubtedly break more records as this Friday, September 19th when the devices appear at brick and mortar Apple and cellular carrier stores

Were you one of the lucky ones that has an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus pre-ordered?

Or will we see you standing in line at retailers this Friday?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.

What a Mess: Trying to Order an iPhone 6

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So if you tried to pre-order Apple’s latest iPhones, their online store wasn’t prepared. Apple said their brand new models would be available at 12:01am PDT, early this morning.

Many couldn’t get through to the site until well after 2:00am PDT. The App for the Apple Store came back earlier but once you tried to order, you could only select Sprint, AT&T or Verizon and once you began the checkout process “not available” appeared. Those on T-Mobile were forced to choose the full Apple website and when they did, guess what? You got the same, “We’ll be back soon” or words to that affect, in several different languages, the same verbiage you were already getting on your computer browser. If you went to the T-Mobile site to order, the web page displayed a form to register for a reminder for when the preorders began. And when you dutifully filled out the form, you were promptly emailed that you would be notified, but that email never materialized.

Preorders through Verizon Wireless and AT&T started out OK but if you are a Sprint customer, its website was acting just like the Apple Store, down for many almost two hours after pre-orders were supposed to begin.

Anyone that is an unabashed, Apple devotee must have had a very frustrating experience. Those that did finally get a through the complicated ordering process, had to wait for their “Help Chat” that churned out several canned and live messages that gave you incorrect instructions and told you to call Apple Customer service which was too busy to take your calls.

Now you can bet Apple probably enjoyed another record demand for their new products, but you would think with all of their experience and knowing the popularity of the iPhone as their flagship product, they would have been better prepared.

Apple could and should do better!

What do you think?

Did you stay up all night, only to be disappointed and disgusted by the experience?

Thoughts About the New Apple Products In My Office Today

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

If you’ve followed this blog for even a short period of time you know that I am not a big fan of “Wearable Technology”. As much as I am a fan of Apple and their products, even if I had money to burn, I wouldn’t buy an Apple Watch.

However, the figures are in from last year. Nearly 1.2 million “Smartwatches” were sold for Android phones!

Think about it, 1.2 million!

There was a lot of talk around the office about Apple’s Big Event yesterday and what it really came down to was Apple vs. Android. The engineering types love Android for its open architecture and all the things they can do with it. I am Apple to the core because I admire the intuitiveness and quality of their products. Although the Apple Watch may not be for me, I will bet that many other Apple lovers will buy it.

Other people in my office “focus group” said they can’t wait to get one and some thought it was too pricey. Still others were frustrated that they couldn’t buy one until next year.

On the other hand, I can’t wait to get my new iPhone 6 Plus…

What are your thoughts about the Apple Watch or Smartwatches in general? How about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. Apple Announces Apple Watch, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So after all of the rumors reported here and everywhere in the tech world, the rumors became reality. Today they announced an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen, an iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch screen and the Apple Watch.

Both iPhones will have a new, Retina HD screen with “Ultra HD” resolution. There is a new horizontal view that looks like my iPad Air and iPad Mini. It allows one- handed operation on both models. Both phones are also slim like the newer iPad touch, just 6.9 millimeters. There is also a new A8 processor that Apple says is 50% faster for graphics and makes the phone better on battery usage. There are many more tweaks and improvements too numerous to mention here except one that comes with the New iOS 8 Upgrade available September 17th:

Apple Pay: Allows you to purchase anything a retail location just by touching the sensor at the register with your iPhone. Similar to other mobile payment devices, the seller never touches or looks at your credit card details. Tim Cook said he wants to eliminate the conventional wallet! American Express, Visa and MasterCard are on board along with six major banking institutions. Some 220,000 merchants including Macy’s McDonald’s and Whole Foods will accept it. Even Uber, Panera Bread and Groupon will include it in their Apps. Can my favorite, Pinkberry, be far behind?

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will launch be available in 10-days on September 19, 2014. The Price? $199 for the 16gb version, $299, for the 64gb and there is even a 128gb version for $399. All based on 2-year contract pricing.

Now on to the Apple Watch. It won’t be available to purchase until early next year. However, it may be worth the wait. The Apple Watch sports a sapphire display and Apple Pay just to name two of its, many features. It looks like a tiny square iPhone with a "Digital Crown," on the side to navigate. The price $349.

Some Android phone users are already saying that many of the features that Apple announced today they already have but in my opinion, no other operating system or company can boast the superior eco system, fit, finish and intuitive simplicity that is the hallmark of Apple. And no, I am not an investor and wasn’t paid to say this. I just admire their design, dependability, reliability and their technical support. It’s the main reason that Mobile Generated News® developed our Apps on the Apple iOS system first.

Today is Apple’s Big Day

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

If the rumors are true, today may be the most significant day in the history of Apple since the late Steve Jobs left his mark on the company.

In this blog you have seen stories about the IPhone 6, iWatch and a new line of thinner and larger iPads. All rumors. Nothing confirmed in typical Apple fashion.

We will know for sure if there are 2 new iPhones or just one and whether it (or both) will be even called the iPhone 6. We’ll know for sure if an iWatch is announced. Or will Apple get in to the Smart TV business?

Today we’ll all find out.

We’ll see how big a day it will be for Apple.

Today, 9.9.2014.

We’ll have a summary here as soon as we digest all of the information. Watch this space!

Just Days Before Apple’s Big Event, CEO Tim Cook Talks iCloud Security

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Next Tuesday, September 9, 2014, is expected to be the most significant Apple event of the Tim Cook era at Apple.

In a rare interview about iCloud security, the Apple CEO addressed concerns following the celebrity nude photo leak of last weekend. According to the Wall Street Journal, Tim Cook said the company will increase security on iCloud. He repeated the statement released earlier this week that the attacks were targeted toward specific individuals. The hackers were able to use various methods to guess those specific passwords. It was not a widespread hack of iCloud.

As a response to the attacks, Apple plans to have new security updates to its iCloud and iTunes login system within two weeks. The updates will notify users directly on their devices whenever someone tries to access their account from a new, unregistered device or tries to change a password. Currently, users were only sent an email.

Additionally, Apple will make improvements to its 2-step authentication security system that requires users to input a second code sent to another registered device in order to access an iTunes account. The 2-step authentication will apply to iCloud when Apple releases iOS 8, its new mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads, in a few weeks.

As we have said here in this blog before, users of wireless technology need to think before they share sensitive material to the Internet or cloud based service. Given the celebrity photo incident and the reports of Home Depot, Morgan Stanley, Target and other company’s credit card security breaches of late, we all must take action!

Check out our Mobile Generated News® blog from this past Wednesday, September 3, 2014 and follow the three easy steps to stronger password protection.

It’s Official

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So now we know for sure.

Apple issued invitations to the news media about an "Event" scheduled for September 9, 2014.

The event will take place at the Cupertino, California headquarters where it is widely speculated that the company will announce the next iPhone.

We have reported the rumors for months now but as you know, Apple likes surprises.  What the rumors have said is that two versions of the iPhone 6 will be announced  –  a 4.7-inch screen and a 5.5-inch model. If these screen sizes are true, they will be larger than any of their previous iPhones and competitive with current Android Smartphone models.

Rumors persist that Apple will also introduce the "iWatch," which we have also reported in this space.

The only thing we know for sure is that Apple will have something to announce on 9.9.2014.

Huge iPad News

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Reports are surfacing today that Apple is about to start production of the largest iPad yet. The report says the iPad will be 12.9 inches diagonally and available sometime during the first quarter of next year.

As you have read here before, the iPhone 6 is on its way and is expected to be announced at Apple’s big event on September 9th. That date is still yet to be officially confirmed by the company and the new iPhone 6 is heavily rumored to become available in two new models ̶ one with a 4.7-inch screen and the other with a 5.5-inch screen.

Will you one of the millions ready to buy the latest technology from Apple? We’ll help you make informed decisions as we find out more. Watch this space!

The Future: Less Work, More Robots?

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

A recent article in the Washington Post by technology entrepreneur, Vivek Wadhwa says that, “the future will allow the human race to live longer and healthier and that robots will drive our cars, manufacture our goods and do our chores.”

In the not so distant past this type of talk was considered science fiction.

However, this really got me thinking. Google is already well past the conceptual stage with their “self-driving cars,” Amazon.com is experimenting with Drones to deliver our goods and Apple just hired some 10,000 robots to build the next iPhone. You can get almost anything delivered to your home including groceries and laundry pickup and delivery that has been available for years.

In the broadcasting business we have watched the paradigm shift of fewer people because of more technology.

What does all of this mean?

It will be up to us to work harder by educating ourselves to learn how to keep up with the technology and be more creative using it. So the future may not mean the end of hard work, we may just spend less time working because being creative isn’t necessarily as time consuming as 40-50 hour workweeks with robots doing the heavy lifting.

What do you think?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy. Most often, viewers do not get to control what they see on the news. Everything is “Swell” for Apple

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Swell is an App like Pandora for Internet Talk Radio. Apple reportedly is going to buy Swell for $30 million.  This has been confirmed by multiple sources familiar with Silicon Valley but Swell nor Apple has made an official announcement.

Swell plays podcasts in continuous streams that personalize for each user over time based on the programs they listen to and skip.

If this proves true, Swell will be the second audio streaming purchase this year for Apple, after acquiring Beats Music in May as part of a $3-billion purchase that also included headphone maker Beats Electronics.

Swell is currently only available for Apple iOS devices.

At Mobile Generated News® we always want you to be informed of the latest technology news, and want news consumers to be able to interact with local media for free. No Lines for Amazon Fire Smartphone, Lukewarm Reviews and a Disappointing Quarter for the Company

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

The Amazon Fire Smartphone goes on sale today and, of course, the sales figures will not be in for awhile. What is in are the reviews of the device and although most reviewers applaud some of the innovations, the phone may be a dud.

Adding to Amazon’s problems is a second-quarter loss wider than even the direst expectations, as the company suffers from ambitious introductions of new products and services.

Back to the Fire Phone… the phone gets very hot. That’s not why they called it the Fire but the name fits! These other negatives outweigh the ambitious design: High price, average performance (the processor struggles to keep up) and shorter battery life than expected. The major negative? The Fire uses a version of Android designed to block the “Google Play” App Store. Given the limited offerings from the Amazon App Store, this may turn off many potential buyers. Without having the eco system of Apple and mainstream Android, this phone may be a huge disappointment.

For many of these reasons Mobile Generated News® decided to design our App for the Apple iOS first because of Apple’s high standards, consistency and continuity.

Given it’s limitations, would you buy an Amazon Fire Smartphone?

At Mobile Generated News® we always want you to be informed of the latest technology, and want news consumers to be able to interact with local media for free. Apple Does it Again Even Though iPad Sales Soften

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Apple’s profits continue to rise. This week, the company released its fiscal third-quarter earnings report, showing revenue of $37.4 billion and a net profit of $7.7 billion—a record June quarter for the company. Apple declared a cash dividend of $.47 per share of the company’s common stock.

The earnings somewhat underperformed Wall Street’s estimate of $37.99 billion in revenues, though the per-share earnings exceeded the $1.23 forecast by analysts.

Sales of the iPhone were up year-over-year: 35 million units were sold—a third-quarter record—generating $19.75 billion in revenues, compared to 31.2 million units generating $18.1 billion a year ago.

The iPad is still the second-biggest seller among Apple's product lines—but showed perhaps the biggest weakness among the company's major products. Apple sold 13.3 million tablets during the quarter, down from both the second quarter, when 16.3 million units were sold, and from the third quarter of 2013, when 14.6 million units were sold. Revenue declined by 8 percent, year over year, from $6.4 billion to $5.9 billion.

Considering the buzz about the iPhone6 and the iWatch (New Rumor: It may be called iTime) the momentum continues even taking into account those of us with older versions of the iPhone holding off purchase until the iPhone6 comes out in the fall.

More iPhone6 Stuff to Try to Keep Your Mind Off All of The Bad News in The World

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So guess what’s happening at the factories building the next generation iPhone6?

Foxconn (Apple’s major supplier) has deployed 10,000 assembly line robots to meet the anticipated demand of producing Apple’s latest iPhone. They are being added to, “…enhance and speed up the manufacturing process,” according to Tim Bajarin, CEO of market research firm, Creative Strategies.

This must be required when literally millions of smartphones are produced each month. “Robotics gives you that level of efficiency, which in the end, is very important for the bottom line,” according to Bajarin. These 10,000 robots will work alongside the previously reported 1.2 million workers at Foxconn.

Obviously, as more robots are introduced, more human jobs will disappear. This type of “job killing” technology isn't new but it certainly reminds all of us to use the creative side of our brains to stay ahead of the technological curve.

What do think? Will “Made in the USA” mean anything if similar robots are developed in more industries and wind up here in the United States taking over many former human jobs? It may need to be changed to “Made in the USA by Robots!”

Apple and IBM? Are You Kidding Me?

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Times have changed! Even the mention of Apple and IBM in the same sentence, seems inconceivable given their bitter rivalry in the 1980s and 1990s over the personal computer market.

The technological paradigm shift has brought about change and this particular union. Apple and IBM announced that they will partner and work together on many different mobile applications designed for a wide range of industries.

As a member of the corporate world, I remember using my Blackberry for business and secretly carrying my brand new iPhone for everything else, so it now makes sense that the evolution of technology has brought these two formal rivals together. Apple can use IBM’s expertise because it doesn't understand the needs of corporate customers as well as it does consumers. IBM can use Apple to widen the audience for its technological tools.

According to the sources close to the companies, the hatred has faded away as technology has evolved and the companies have moved in new directions. IBM got out of the PC business when it sold that division to the Lenovo Group nearly a decade ago. Apple now makes far more money from its iPhones than it does from its Mac computers. By joining forces, Apple and IBM are hoping to build mobile applications that prove iPhones and iPads can serve many business purposes.

We saw the potential of the iPhone and iPad as soon as they were invented.

iPhone6: More Rumors, More Phone

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

My last update on the iPhone 6 was back in May. More rumors are surfacing about new features so it’s time for an update. Of course Apple will not confirm any of this speculation; however, many of the rumors about the iPhone 5s and 5c turned out to be true. This could be a sign that there is just a bit more transparency under the Tim Cook regime.

NEW RUMORS:

In addition to a larger screen and perhaps two models (4.7 inch and 5.5 inch) there are persistent rumors that the screen may be scratch-free, made of Sapphire glass and be higher resolution. The advantage to the Sapphire glass is that it is twice as durable as the glass being used currently for the display and it is already being used on the 5s model’s Touch ID Home button and rear-facing camera cover. There is also talk that the new iPhone 6 display will cover the whole surface of the iPhone.

As I mentioned in May, the iPhone 6 will be thinner with new rumors saying that the functions of the earphone jack will be incorporated into the lightning connector because the earphone jack is the thickest component of the current iPhones. The combination of the earphone jack and the battery add thickness to the device, so another rumor promises a new, thinner and more powerful battery. Also charging the phone using wireless technology is also rumored. There is also talk of improved image stabilization along with a higher resolution rear-facing camera or at least a lower aperture ability to improve pictures taken in low light locations. The front facing camera may also be upgraded to 1080p resolution.

Also, the Apple logo on the back of the new iPhone may be lit up, similar to the logos on the MacBook.

PCs Are Becoming Dinosaurs…Tablets to Reign by Next Year!

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

2015 will be a big year for iPads and Android Tablets. Gartner Research, in a report released this week says that PCs will be outsold by Tablets by next year. Tablets sold worldwide from manufacturers to retailers will increase from 256 million this year to 321 million in 2015.

Shipments of laptops and desktops will decrease from 276 million this year to 262 million next year. This confirms a prediction that the late Steve Jobs declared in 2010 that the “Post PC era” was upon us.

What this means is the desire by consumers for mobile devices will continue to play a pivotal role in the future of computing. This was a trend we predicted when the iPad debuted in 2010 and we began development of Mobile Generated News®.

Have you traded in your PC Desktop or Laptop for a Tablet yet?
