Drones in the Movies

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

The FAA announced that they will allow aerial photo and video production companies to use drones to shoot movies.

For the past two years, Drones have been conspicuous at the yearly Cine Gear Expo at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. See the video that I shot at the show above.

This is significant because prior to the invention of the Drone or unmanned aircraft, the only way to get spectacular aerial shots was to use helicopters equipped with an expensive gyro stabilized camera systems.

Drones flying at the Cine Gear show came in different configurations that used sophisticated video or film cameras, Go Pro HD cameras, or even iPhones.

The Federal Aviation Administration says that drones used for movie making do not need an FAA-issued certificate of airworthiness, based on a finding they do not pose a threat to the national airspace or national security.

There are liability issues to consider among others but potential savings for “Big Budget” movies could decidely turn the big budgets into smaller ones and improve the creative process by taking Drones to places that are too small for conventional aircraft to go.

Do you have concerns about Drones and privacy issues? How do you feel about using them for movie making?

Blackberry Debuts New Passport Amidst All the Talk About The New iPhones

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

With all of the publicity about Apple’s new iPhones and operating system both positive and negative, Blackberry’s timing is certainly questionable.

For many years I couldn’t live without my Blackberry, because of its physical and very responsive keyboard but when Apple’s iPhone first came out I was hooked. It was not just the simplicity and elegance of design. It was far superior as an Internet device. The web looked almost as good as my desktop computer and I finally gave in and accepted the virtual keyboard because the iPhone was more than just a handheld email reader and cell phone. Apple began the Smartphone revolution with the worldwide web in the palm of your hand. It was reminiscent of when I graduated from a Palm Pilot to a Treo. Remember them?

So Blackberry still has a few loyal followers even with the failures of the parade of models that came out with their “new” operating system. So now comes the debut of the Blackberry Passport that will begin shipping on October 6, 2014. It features a 4.5” square touch display, 13 Megapixel camera, 32 GB Internal storage, 30 hours of battery life, 1440 x 1440 resolution, 1080p HD video recording and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. At first glance at the specs, sounds pretty competitive, huh?

But wait. A square screen that shoots 1080p HD video?  Only 32GB of internal storage offered?

The BlackBerry Passport, from what we have read, is difficult to hold given its boxy footprint and a keyboard that is not as good as the original. The camera specs are impressive but Apple uses other enhancements to make their pictures look better

At first glance, it may the phone of choice for a small group of business users, but for the vast majority of consumers the iPhone 6 is likely to remain the winner.

We'll have more to say as the new iPhones and the Blackberry Passport are tested in the court of public opinion.

Record iPhone Sales

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

According to the latest Apple news release, the company has sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models just three days after the launch, last Friday, September 19. A new sales record for iPhones.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin.”

In my opinion, they could have sold even more if they anticipated the demand and streamlined the order process. As much as I am an Apple fan of their design and craftsmanship, many people that did everything they were told to do were left with a 3-4 week wait for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Imagine the record they could have broken and how much happier their loyalists would be if they did at least the same job they did a year ago when the iPhone 5s was available for pre-order.

How a company so advanced could not make sure their systems and personnel were ready for the onslaught of orders? Or did they just plan it this way to build up demand?

What do you think?

Just Days Before Apple’s Big Event, CEO Tim Cook Talks iCloud Security

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Next Tuesday, September 9, 2014, is expected to be the most significant Apple event of the Tim Cook era at Apple.

In a rare interview about iCloud security, the Apple CEO addressed concerns following the celebrity nude photo leak of last weekend. According to the Wall Street Journal, Tim Cook said the company will increase security on iCloud. He repeated the statement released earlier this week that the attacks were targeted toward specific individuals. The hackers were able to use various methods to guess those specific passwords. It was not a widespread hack of iCloud.

As a response to the attacks, Apple plans to have new security updates to its iCloud and iTunes login system within two weeks. The updates will notify users directly on their devices whenever someone tries to access their account from a new, unregistered device or tries to change a password. Currently, users were only sent an email.

Additionally, Apple will make improvements to its 2-step authentication security system that requires users to input a second code sent to another registered device in order to access an iTunes account. The 2-step authentication will apply to iCloud when Apple releases iOS 8, its new mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads, in a few weeks.

As we have said here in this blog before, users of wireless technology need to think before they share sensitive material to the Internet or cloud based service. Given the celebrity photo incident and the reports of Home Depot, Morgan Stanley, Target and other company’s credit card security breaches of late, we all must take action!

Check out our Mobile Generated News® blog from this past Wednesday, September 3, 2014 and follow the three easy steps to stronger password protection.
