So now we know for sure.

Apple issued invitations to the news media about an "Event" scheduled for September 9, 2014.

The event will take place at the Cupertino, California headquarters where it is widely speculated that the company will announce the next iPhone.

We have reported the rumors for months now but as you know, Apple likes surprises.  What the rumors have said is that two versions of the iPhone 6 will be announced  –  a 4.7-inch screen and a 5.5-inch model. If these screen sizes are true, they will be larger than any of their previous iPhones and competitive with current Android Smartphone models.

Rumors persist that Apple will also introduce the "iWatch," which we have also reported in this space.

The only thing we know for sure is that Apple will have something to announce on 9.9.2014.

Huge iPad News

Reports are surfacing today that Apple is about to start production of the largest iPad yet. The report says the iPad will be 12.9 inches diagonally and available sometime during the first quarter of next year.

As you have read here before, the iPhone 6 is on its way and is expected to be announced at Apple’s big event on September 9th. That date is still yet to be officially confirmed by the company and the new iPhone 6 is heavily rumored to become available in two new models ̶ one with a 4.7-inch screen and the other with a 5.5-inch screen.

Frequent Location Service on iPhones

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So here is a feature that has been part of my iPhone since the original iPhone but has been refined in subsequent updates: Frequent Location Service.

As you know, I have mentioned several times in this blog that I am addicted to gadgets. This addiction can be traced back to the 7th grade when I discovered Walkie Talkies and had to have one mounted on the handlebars of my bicycle.

I just discovered a feature of Apple’s iPhone I didn't know existed. As I was rushing out the door this past weekend, I glanced at my iPhone 5s Notification Screen. The message told me that my drive to San Diego would take approximately 3-hours based on “current traffic.” (It turned out it took 20-minutes more) However, my iPhone knew I was headed to San Diego from my home in Los Angeles!

It turns out that the iPhone keeps track of places you have recently been, as well as how often and when you visited them, in order to learn places that are important to you. When I checked the iPhone support pages at Apple I not only learned this but also that, “This data is kept solely on your device and won't be sent to Apple without your consent. It will be used to provide you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing.”

My regular commute to the San Diego area only takes a little over 2-hours, however, I was shocked that my iPhone knew I was headed to San Diego. Although I found this information helpful, I was a bit troubled about it as well. When we arrived at one of the regular hotels we stay at, the iPhone also notified us with the name, address and telephone number of the hotel.

What troubled me is about what’s next. What about merchants that I regularly frequent bombarding me with advertising?

Don’t be surprised if you see messages pop up on your notification screen when the iPhone has learned your frequent locations!

Believe it or not, a team of creators including a Harvard professor are currently testing an iPhone attachment that will add scents to your text messages, pictures and email!

You can currently download the world's first scent-based mobile messaging app, oSnap but you will have to wait until late this year to get the full experience. Right now there are only two “Hot Spots ” ̶ one in New York and the other in Paris ̶ that have the prototype associated equipment to receive the aromas.

For many of us, we have always thought that, someday, smell would be added to sight and sound on our TV sets. There have been rumors of “Smellovision” for years. Advertisers, in particular food suppliers, have always wanted to sell their products over TV associated with the smell of their food.

Now There is a Case For Your iPhone That Lets You See In the Dark

Remember those pictures of military men and women wearing those big goggles to see in the dark? 

Well now there is an iPhone 5/5s case that has two side-by-side cameras on the back. There is an infrared one and a VGA one that adds some more detail to the heat-mapped image. 

The case is manufactured by Flir, a company that I am familiar with because they make infrared imaging cameras attached to helicopters used by the military and law enforcement to find people they are looking for in pitch black darkness.

For consumers this iPhone attachment can be used using its thermal-imaging capabilities to help pinpoint the position of pipe clogs, identify leaks before they damage wood and walls, find weak spots in your home’s insulation, see if there are raccoons or God forbid, rats hiding in your walls or shrubs, and make sure your pet is still alive.

Ultimately, this may be the perfect accessory case for camping this summer to make sure your campfire is out and find your friends that may be lost in the dark.

The cost? Are you sitting down? $350! It may be pricey but it sure is cool!

Ebola outbreak raises concerns in US

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

The two Americans, infected with the deadly Ebola virus while providing aid in Liberia, on have now returned to the US for treatment. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is trying hard to save the two lives by allowing them to be treated with Zmapp, a drug that has never been used on humans.

As of right now, only 3 doses of the drug are available. There is no guarantee the patients will be cured, but that isn’t stopping them from trying. I’d argue that you should do everything in your power to save a life, but I would definitely consider the point that the drug should be more developed so more lives could be saved in the long run.

Wildfires are Rampant in California

California firefighters have been tackling fires all summer and have taken on over 200 in this past week alone.

The cause of the fires is the State’s record-breaking drought matched with high temperatures and low humidity.

Apple Does it Again Even Though iPad Sales Soften

Apple’s profits continue to rise. This week, the company released its fiscal third-quarter earnings report, showing revenue of $37.4 billion and a net profit of $7.7 billion—a record June quarter for the company. Apple declared a cash dividend of $.47 per share of the company’s common stock.

The earnings somewhat underperformed Wall Street’s estimate of $37.99 billion in revenues, though the per-share earnings exceeded the $1.23 forecast by analysts.

Sales of the iPhone were up year-over-year: 35 million units were sold—a third-quarter record—generating $19.75 billion in revenues, compared to 31.2 million units generating $18.1 billion a year ago.

The iPad is still the second-biggest seller among Apple's product lines—but showed perhaps the biggest weakness among the company's major products. Apple sold 13.3 million tablets during the quarter, down from both the second quarter, when 16.3 million units were sold, and from the third quarter of 2013, when 14.6 million units were sold. Revenue declined by 8 percent, year over year, from $6.4 billion to $5.9 billion.

Considering the buzz about the iPhone6 and the iWatch (New Rumor: It may be called iTime) the momentum continues even taking into account those of us with older versions of the iPhone holding off purchase until the iPhone6 comes out in the fall.

The digital camcorder industry was very tired until GoPro came along. The likes and followers are just as impressive as the best-selling camera itself. It’s Facebook page has 7.5 million likes, Instagram has 2.5 million followers, and Twitter has 1 million followers. It’s YouTube page has 450 million views. To people in the tech world, these numbers are outrageous.

According to its IPO, GoPro has 11 competitors. However, the company will continue to generate great growth and profit due to the culture it has built through its online communities.

Malaysian Airlines flight comes to crash landing in Ukraine

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

The latest news this morning is of a Malaysian Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lampur coming to a crash landing in Ukraine, killing all 295 people on board.

As reports continue to come in, news sources are pondering the cause of the crash. The leading scenarios are a mechanical failure, a terrorist group’s shooting a missile at the aircraft (that was flying at 32,000 feet), or a terrorist group’s involvement on board the aircraft (radio signals were not sent as regularly as they should have once the flight crossed into Ukraine). Keep in mind that the border of Ukraine and Russia is a conflict zone.

All of the reports could benefit from video clips by experts in the field of aviation, terrorism, and national security. These experts could submit their clips to the MoGN App.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation along with the Harvard School of Public Health just released a study that shows that one in every four Americans experience a “great deal” of stress from reading, watching, or listening to the news.

The Transportation Security Administration is asking US-bound travelers coming from airports in Europe and the Middle East to power on their cell phones when going through security.

The latest security increase comes as a result of intelligence that terrorist groups in Syria are discovering new ways to make smaller explosive devices. If a passenger cannot turn on his cell phone, then that passenger will not be able to board the plane.

World Cup storms televisions across the United States

How much so? The numbers from yesterday’s game have not been released quite yet, but the preliminary data shows the amount of Americans that watched the soccer games is greater than those that watched an NBA playoff games or an NHL playoff game, combined.

Protect Your iPhone Passcode, Someone Could Be Watching…

Many people who use the same 4-digit code to unlock their iPhone may use that same code for other purposes including gaining access to their ATM.  If you are one of these people, read on!

According to a story in The Huffington Post, researchers at the University of Massachusetts have developed a computer program to recognize finger movements as people enter their passcode on mobile devices.  The finger photos can be recorded by video cameras at various distances in public places and the program deciphers the movements converting them to numbers on the keypad.

According to the study that will be released in August, other mobile devices, webcams, smartwatches, regular video cameras and Google Glass could be used to record the images.  

Just something else to think about in this high technology world, which we live in.  If you have an iPhone with Touch ID, I would use it rather than entering your passcode manually.  You never know who or what may be watching!

Coca-Cola becoming UGC Champion

Coca-Cola is quickly making its mark as a champion in the field of User Generated Content. A couple weeks ago, this blog reported on Coca-Cola’s ad created entirely of videos submitted by fans.

Now, the company has released a campaign for the World Cup in which a giant flag called the “Happiness Flag” was constructed from selfies taken by Coca-Cola lovers from around the world.

Graduation Speeches enhanced my MoGN App

As hundreds of thousands of college seniors have become college graduates over the past few weeks, they have heard some interesting messages in speeches from some distinguished people.

Bill and Melinda Gates urged Stanford grads to focus on helping the poor as they progress on their journeys in the working world. Elon Musk told USC grads to “work super hard.”

Hello Amazon? Why a New Smartphone?

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So Amazon has joined the Smartphone wars.  Introduced today in Seattle, The fire PHONE.  It has a 4.7 inch screen, LCD HD display, claims to have a brighter screen that is better outdoors and a Quad-core 2.2GHz processor. Amazon also says it has a 13MP camera with image stabilization.

It also has a feature called Firefly.  Firefly uses the camera to recognize books, DVDs, phone numbers, QR Codes, CDs, URLs, games and bar codes.  It recognizes over a hundred million items and finds them in its database. 

So what’s the big deal that could make this phone a stand out game changer? 

Dynamic Perspective.  It gives the display a 3-D look, so as you move the phone, the picture on the display moves with you much like the moving animated backgrounds work on the iPhone 5s.  Dynamic Perspective works on photos, maps, the web browser and e-books.  The fire PHONE uses 4 additional cameras with infrared capability to guide the Dynamic Perspective screen orientation.

But even with all of these creative new features, will consumers find practical uses for them? And, can Amazon compete in the App arena given Apple’s huge inventory of available Apps?

The fire PHONE looks very cool.  Now we’ll need to hear from the tech geeks as to whether they are impressed to make this new Amazon product a contender.

Trying to Stop the High-priced Parking Tickets in L.A.

Parking tickets are one of those penalties that really tend to irk people. A grassroots organization in Los Angeles is trying to make those tickets a little less irritating for the average parker.

The Los Angeles Parking Freedom Initiative is attempting to set a limit of $23 for parking tickets that do not endanger the public’s safety. According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, about 75 percent of the average parking ticket pays for basic city services. The average parking ticket currently is $68.

As of right now, the grassroots organization has been trying to spread their message through lobbying and public relations initiatives. However, they have struggled to marry voice or video with their message. The Mobile Generated News App could change that.

Members of the organization could record quick clips that explain who they are, what they are doing, and why they are doing it. Those messages could be on local television minutes after they are recorded.

UCSB Tragedy is a heated issue that needs UGC

As more and more voices behind the terrible tragedy that occurred in Isla Vista continue to surface, the general public is becoming increasingly troubled by the news.

Some of the key pieces of video are the shooter’s explanation of why he did what he did (it has now been taken off of the internet by many news outlets) and a victim’s father’s emotional speech urging politicians to reconsider laws on gun rights to prevent future atrocities like this one.

After the victim's Father's emotional statement, the next set of comments came from the shooter’s father, neighbors, and roommates.  These were recorded on their mobile devices and given to the media.

More and more people can use the Mobile Generated News App to submit their sentiments and comments about the tragedy. Local news outlets can insure that the videos are legitimate as they can see where the videos were taken and submitted.
