My Naked Photos Are on the Internet…Now What Do I Do?

The short answer: Unfortunately, it’s too late if the pictures or sensitive information are already out there.

We mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the best way to avoid embarassing situations that are now facing actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and Kate Upton is not to use your smartphone, tablet or computer to take naked pictures in the first place. However, if you must, here are three suggestions to prevent them and other sensitive information from appearing elsewhere:

1. PASSWORDS:  Use a password that isn’t a word you would find in the dictionary. Use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers. If the site permits, use symbols as well. The more complex the better! Use a variety of passwords, not the same one for every account. You can also use a password manager service that creates passwords for you. It will issue you a Master Password to access all of your individual passwords.  DON’T SHARE YOUR MASTER PASSWORD.

2. TURN OFF BACKUPS:  In iPhones and iPads turn off “My Photo Stream” and “Photo Sharing”. In Android devices turn off “Photo Share”, “Google+”, or similar App. If your concerned about sensitive documents, your contact list and calendar, backup your mobile device on your computer hard drive and don’t use iCloud or Google Play cloud services.

3. USE EXTRA VERIFICATION:  This is a two-step process that uses unique codes sent to your device to access cloud services.

A High Tech Baby Monitor

The audio Baby Monitor was invented back in 1937 and hasn’t changed much until now. Yes they evolved into Video Baby Monitors several years ago but all you really learn from them is whether the baby is awake or asleep.

A company called Sproutling is changing all that. They have invented a high tech baby monitor that delivers a wearable device that straps around the baby’s ankle. And what monitoring does it do? It senses heart rate, the temperature of the skin, movement and noise. This data is transmitted to a Smartphone App and alerts parents when the baby wakes up, has a fever, and has the smarts to predict when the baby will wake up and what the best sleeping conditions might be.

It will be available soon for $299. It can be pre-ordered at a discounted price of $249 from the company’s web site.

The Smartshoe is the Next Wearable Accessory for your Smartphone

So what’s the “Next Big Thing” in Wearable Technology as a companion to your Smartphone?

The Smartshoe, that’s what!

From India, a company called Ducere Technologies has created a Bluetooth-Enabled wireless shoe that syncs with its own Smartphone App.

And, once synchronized what does it do? The shoe connects to Google Maps and vibrates telling people wearing them which way to walk to reach their destination.

It was originally developed to help the blind but it will work for anyone who doesn’t want to have their eyes glued to their Smartphone so they can look and see where they are going.

How many times do we find ourselves absorbed in our Smartphones walking down the street? Or, how many times have we witnessed people buried in their phones escape a serious injury or death as they cross busy streets? I’m certainly guilty of paying too much attention to my phone and have seen others so involved that they have nearly been hit by motorists.

No Lines for Amazon Fire Smartphone, Lukewarm Reviews and a Disappointing Quarter for the Company

The Amazon Fire Smartphone goes on sale today and, of course, the sales figures will not be in for awhile. What is in are the reviews of the device and although most reviewers applaud some of the innovations, the phone may be a dud.

Adding to Amazon’s problems is a second-quarter loss wider than even the direst expectations, as the company suffers from ambitious introductions of new products and services.

Back to the Fire Phone… the phone gets very hot. That’s not why they called it the Fire but the name fits! These other negatives outweigh the ambitious design: High price, average performance (the processor struggles to keep up) and shorter battery life than expected. The major negative? The Fire uses a version of Android designed to block the “Google Play” App Store. Given the limited offerings from the Amazon App Store, this may turn off many potential buyers. Without having the eco system of Apple and mainstream Android, this phone may be a huge disappointment.

For many of these reasons Mobile Generated News® decided to design our App for the Apple iOS first because of Apple’s high standards, consistency and continuity.

Full Privacy Smartphone Now Available

The first Smartphone to promise Privacy and Data Protection is shipping now. The Blackphone, as it is called, will be pricey with no discounts available from any carrier.

The cost is $629. The Blackphone is a joint venture of SilentCircles and Geeksphone. They hope to sell to government agencies, companies and individuals. The Blackphone runs on a modified version of the Android Operating System called. PrivateOS.

Users of the Blackphone can control what information can and can’t be accessed by Apps and turn off the camera and other features. The data can also be erased from a remote secure computer similar to what the “Find My iPhone” App does for Apple devices.

Would you pay the price for the Blackphone to keep you data secure?

Hello Amazon? Why a New Smartphone?

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So Amazon has joined the Smartphone wars.  Introduced today in Seattle, The fire PHONE.  It has a 4.7 inch screen, LCD HD display, claims to have a brighter screen that is better outdoors and a Quad-core 2.2GHz processor. Amazon also says it has a 13MP camera with image stabilization.

It also has a feature called Firefly.  Firefly uses the camera to recognize books, DVDs, phone numbers, QR Codes, CDs, URLs, games and bar codes.  It recognizes over a hundred million items and finds them in its database. 

So what’s the big deal that could make this phone a stand out game changer? 

Dynamic Perspective.  It gives the display a 3-D look, so as you move the phone, the picture on the display moves with you much like the moving animated backgrounds work on the iPhone 5s.  Dynamic Perspective works on photos, maps, the web browser and e-books.  The fire PHONE uses 4 additional cameras with infrared capability to guide the Dynamic Perspective screen orientation.

But even with all of these creative new features, will consumers find practical uses for them? And, can Amazon compete in the App arena given Apple’s huge inventory of available Apps?

The fire PHONE looks very cool.  Now we’ll need to hear from the tech geeks as to whether they are impressed to make this new Amazon product a contender.

iPhone 6 Rumors are hot and heavy – the rumors not the iPhone!

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Anyone reading this blog with any regularity knows that I am a gadget freak.  There I said it.  I feel much better now!  I’m not sure why I am like this but I have been this way since I rode a bicycle to elementary school. My bicycle was the one with the Walkie-Talkie.

 

This condition led me to a career in Television News lasting decades so I am NOT complaining.

An unfortunate side effect is the desire (and need, of course) to have the latest gadget.  The iPhone 6 is no exception.  Although I am not crazy enough to wait in line on opening day, I somehow manage to get my hands on one the day the new iPhone hits the stores.

Surfing the net, the latest version is due out in mid-September.  It will most likely have a larger screen, perhaps a better camera, and may be much thinner, similar in thickness to the iPod Touch.

As usual, Apple does a great job of keeping secrets so we probably won’t know more until we get very close to the release date.  Whatever the iPhone 6 features will be there is no doubt in my mind that it will make a great device for Citizen Journalists.

Quick Clips are changing the way we do business

Quick video clips are taking an increasingly important role in businesses across the map. The less-than-10-seconds clips add a sense of personality to a company and can bring a consumer behind-the-scenes. These clips are usually taken on a smartphone or tablet.

When the Los Angeles Kings became the fourth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven-games series after losing the first three games, the Kings’ Public Relations staff released a short video that captured the players’ true emotions as they high-fived one another and headed into the locker room to celebrate the win. Even if you were not a fan, you couldn’t help having a smile on your face as you watched these professionals celebrate like children. The video above is almost a minute long, but the story could have been told in just a few seconds.

Similar scenarios can take place in newsrooms and boardrooms across the United States. Potential clients want to know more about a company before they decide to “buy in” and news consumers want to know how their news is getting to them.

Facebook’s new focus is a world-sized problem

Facebook is expanding into data-poor countries like India and Brazil. Its biggest problem is to break down the barriers that keep customers in third-world countries from easily accessing the popular social networking site. That, and figuring out a way to generate revenue in those countries.

The site spent years trying to grow its company in the United States before figuring out how to make revenue. The answer was ads. According to a Quartz.com article, 60 percent of Facebook’s users who live outside North America contribute just 25 percent of its revenue.

To help solve this equation, Facebook bought a company in India called Little Eye Labs. The company allows app-developers to figure out the best solution to limit the amount of power, disk space, memory, and data that their apps use on their users’ phones.

Facebook has had minor successes in Asia and Latin America (see graphic below), but is banking on India and Brazil to help generate revenue. Companies that choose to advertise on Facebook want to see high return rates on their investments and Facebook continues to try to figure out a way to boost those numbers in emerging markets.

Smartphones take majority share of mobile phone market

Smartphones have become increasingly popular over the past several years and for the first time ever, they now hold a majority share of the world’s cellphone market.

According to recent data on the mobile phone industry, over half of the 435 million phones sold around the world in the second quarter of 2013 were smart phones.

This news comes as no surprise as smartphones allow users to accomplish tasks and connect with one another in ways that were not possible just a few years ago. Oh Noooo! Not a Cuckoo Clock but a Cookoo Watch!

Greetings from Mobile Generated News®  MoGN!

Three weeks ago I blogged about Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Smartwatch and what a ridiculous accessory I thought it was.   My feelings haven’t changed but I'm beginning to doubt myself.  Have Samsung, Sony and the other companies that are making these things gone cuckoo?

Well at least one has! 

ConnecteDevice Ltd. Is the maker of Cookoo ― the connected watch.  What makes this “watch” different from others is that it looks more like a designer watch and actually may be useful to augment a smartphone rather than just act as an extension phone.  First of all it will work with  iPhone 5s, iPhone 4S, iPad mini, iPad (4th & 3rd generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and Samsung Galaxy S4 running with Android 4.2.2* platform. With more devices announced in the near future.

It does seem more logical to me, although I’m not quite 100% sold.

It is designed to alert and notify you when your Smartphone or Tablet receives them.  It can tell you when you receive incoming calls, missed calls, Facebook messages and posts, Twitter mentions, calendar reminders, text messages and email notifications.

It will also tell you when your device is out of range (such as leaving your Smartphone or Tablet behind) assuming you are wearing the watch, let you know when the battery is low on your Tablet and/or Smartphone and pass along timer and alarm alerts.  It has other features as well that could prove useful. By pressing a button on the Cookoo watch, you can remotely “Check In” on Facebook, trigger the camera on your device to take pictures that lets you be in them, play or pause music, skip to the next song, etc.

So maybe this “Smartwatch” isn’t cuckoo after all.
