Blackberry Debuts New Passport Amidst All the Talk About The New iPhones

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

With all of the publicity about Apple’s new iPhones and operating system both positive and negative, Blackberry’s timing is certainly questionable.

For many years I couldn’t live without my Blackberry, because of its physical and very responsive keyboard but when Apple’s iPhone first came out I was hooked. It was not just the simplicity and elegance of design. It was far superior as an Internet device. The web looked almost as good as my desktop computer and I finally gave in and accepted the virtual keyboard because the iPhone was more than just a handheld email reader and cell phone. Apple began the Smartphone revolution with the worldwide web in the palm of your hand. It was reminiscent of when I graduated from a Palm Pilot to a Treo. Remember them?

So Blackberry still has a few loyal followers even with the failures of the parade of models that came out with their “new” operating system. So now comes the debut of the Blackberry Passport that will begin shipping on October 6, 2014. It features a 4.5” square touch display, 13 Megapixel camera, 32 GB Internal storage, 30 hours of battery life, 1440 x 1440 resolution, 1080p HD video recording and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. At first glance at the specs, sounds pretty competitive, huh?

But wait. A square screen that shoots 1080p HD video?  Only 32GB of internal storage offered?

The BlackBerry Passport, from what we have read, is difficult to hold given its boxy footprint and a keyboard that is not as good as the original. The camera specs are impressive but Apple uses other enhancements to make their pictures look better

At first glance, it may the phone of choice for a small group of business users, but for the vast majority of consumers the iPhone 6 is likely to remain the winner.

We'll have more to say as the new iPhones and the Blackberry Passport are tested in the court of public opinion.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Arrive Sort Of

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

For those who were able to get through on the website for pre-orders some of you got your iPhones today. For those of you who waited in long lines at Apple Stores many more of you got your iPhones today. For those of you contracted with carriers Verizon, Sprint and AT&T and went to your local Best Buy Store many of you were able to get both models without having to wait in long lines overnight.

For those with T-Mobile things were different. On pre-order night, you couldn’t purchase a T-Mobile iPhone in the Apple App store on your iPad or iPhone. Today, if you went to a T-Mobile store anywhere in the Los Angeles area, you might have been lucky to get an iPhone 6, but none of the stores   ̶  I was told by a forthright store manager had any iPhone 6 Plus phones to sell. She said the quantities were extremely limited and didn't expect the iPhone Plus until October. We all know that T-Mobile is the smallest of the major US cell phone providers, however their customers deserve better.

Is this a T-Mobile issue or an Apple issue or both?

We’ll see in the days ahead whether more new iPhone models will be allocated for T-Mobile.

Just asking.

iPhone 6 is a Sellout

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

This should come as no surprise, Apple has done it again! They have set a new sales record for their biggest seller, the iPhone. This despite the miserable and frustrating pre-ordering process that so many experienced last week.

Apple announced that 4-million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Smartphones sold in the first 24 hours. The iPhone 6 Plus sold out before the iPhone 6 suggesting that consumers really wanted an iPhone with a larger screen.

To put some perspective to this, the iPhone 5 pre-orders were 2-million in 2012. Apple didn’t take pre-orders for the iPhone 5s and industry sources estimated that the iPhone 5c sold 2.2 million pre-orders in 2013.

The large number of pre-orders will undoubtedly break more records as this Friday, September 19th when the devices appear at brick and mortar Apple and cellular carrier stores

Were you one of the lucky ones that has an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus pre-ordered?

Or will we see you standing in line at retailers this Friday?

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to contribute their opinions or news stories and be able to interact with local media for free. We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.

What a Mess: Trying to Order an iPhone 6

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So if you tried to pre-order Apple’s latest iPhones, their online store wasn’t prepared. Apple said their brand new models would be available at 12:01am PDT, early this morning.

Many couldn’t get through to the site until well after 2:00am PDT. The App for the Apple Store came back earlier but once you tried to order, you could only select Sprint, AT&T or Verizon and once you began the checkout process “not available” appeared. Those on T-Mobile were forced to choose the full Apple website and when they did, guess what? You got the same, “We’ll be back soon” or words to that affect, in several different languages, the same verbiage you were already getting on your computer browser. If you went to the T-Mobile site to order, the web page displayed a form to register for a reminder for when the preorders began. And when you dutifully filled out the form, you were promptly emailed that you would be notified, but that email never materialized.

Preorders through Verizon Wireless and AT&T started out OK but if you are a Sprint customer, its website was acting just like the Apple Store, down for many almost two hours after pre-orders were supposed to begin.

Anyone that is an unabashed, Apple devotee must have had a very frustrating experience. Those that did finally get a through the complicated ordering process, had to wait for their “Help Chat” that churned out several canned and live messages that gave you incorrect instructions and told you to call Apple Customer service which was too busy to take your calls.

Now you can bet Apple probably enjoyed another record demand for their new products, but you would think with all of their experience and knowing the popularity of the iPhone as their flagship product, they would have been better prepared.

Apple could and should do better!

What do you think?

Did you stay up all night, only to be disappointed and disgusted by the experience?

It’s Official

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So now we know for sure.

Apple issued invitations to the news media about an "Event" scheduled for September 9, 2014.

The event will take place at the Cupertino, California headquarters where it is widely speculated that the company will announce the next iPhone.

We have reported the rumors for months now but as you know, Apple likes surprises.  What the rumors have said is that two versions of the iPhone 6 will be announced  –  a 4.7-inch screen and a 5.5-inch model. If these screen sizes are true, they will be larger than any of their previous iPhones and competitive with current Android Smartphone models.

Rumors persist that Apple will also introduce the "iWatch," which we have also reported in this space.

The only thing we know for sure is that Apple will have something to announce on 9.9.2014.

The iPhone 6 and the iWatch to debut together?

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

So the big rumor over this past weekend is that Apple will begin production on the iWatch in July.

Now you’ve read here before that I really don’t see the appeal or the need for such a device, however, Samsung and other manufacturers have been very successful with their versions of this gadget.

Fueling this rumor were the improvements in iOS8 announced at the Apple Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this month and the news from Apple that they have plans to launch an electronic watch coming just 5-days later. With the emphasis on using the iPhone as a health monitor, it makes sense that sensors could be built into the iWatch to help monitor your pulse, heartbeat, etc.

The accompanying rumor is the iWatch will come out at the same time as the iPhone 6, most likely, this September. A report just out from Reuters says that one of the major manufacturers used to produce Apple products is hiring 100,000 additional workers to build the next iPhone.

Mobile Generated News® will keep you informed on the latest developments in news and technology and we welcome your comments and, more importantly, your content.

Big Apple Announcements!

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Today Apple unveils two new operating systems for Apple mobile devices and mac computers. Apple announces iOS8 for iPhones and iPads and Yosemite that will be integrated operating systems.

This could be a seismic shift in the mobile operating system world for Apple.  3rd party apps will soon be able talk to each other. Historically, applications on iOS have been independent entities that could not share data and features.  iOS 8 will make this possible.  Also, you will also be able to log into other Apps using the “Touch ID” feature that is the fingerprint reader built in to the iPhone 5s.

But my favorite new feature is the new “Hey Siri” capability.  You don’t have to press a button to get help from Apple’s virtual digital assistant, you just say. “Hey Siri” and Siri recognizes your voice.

The other big news is what wasnt said.  The new iPhone 6 is around the corner so there are undoubtedly other big hardware announcements coming this Fall or sooner.

iPhone 6 Rumors are hot and heavy – the rumors not the iPhone!

Greetings from Mobile Generated News® MoGN!

Anyone reading this blog with any regularity knows that I am a gadget freak.  There I said it.  I feel much better now!  I’m not sure why I am like this but I have been this way since I rode a bicycle to elementary school. My bicycle was the one with the Walkie-Talkie.

This condition led me to a career in Television News lasting decades so I am NOT complaining.

An unfortunate side effect is the desire (and need, of course) to have the latest gadget.  The iPhone 6 is no exception.  Although I am not crazy enough to wait in line on opening day, I somehow manage to get my hands on one the day the new iPhone hits the stores.

Surfing the net, the latest version is due out in mid-September.  It will most likely have a larger screen, perhaps a better camera, and may be much thinner, similar in thickness to the iPod Touch.
As usual, Apple does a great job of keeping secrets so we probably won’t know more until we get very close to the release date.  Whatever the iPhone 6 features will be there is no doubt in my mind that it will make a great device for Citizen Journalists.

At Mobile Generated News®, we want news consumers to be able to interact with local and national media for free and know about the latest products and trends.  You can now have a dialogue with your local media outlets by becoming a Citizen Journalist contributor of video and still images.  In just a few months, you’ll be able to use your brand new iPhone 6!

We believe that contributing to the news cycle is essential to our democracy.  When newsworthy material is submitted to us, we vet it for authenticity and then upload it to our newsfeed.  Most often, viewers do not get to control what they see on the news.
